Nurturing Success: Examining the Impact of Tongue and Lip Tie Releases on Breastfeeding Through Comprehensive Surveys
Introduction: Embarking on a journey from March 2022 to May 2023, our study centered on unraveling the transformative effects of tongue and lip tie releases on the breastfeeding journeys of infants aged 0-12 weeks. Our approach involved the administration of the same set of 10 questions at the initial evaluation, the 1-week follow-up visit, and via email 4 weeks post-procedure. The invaluable data obtained offers unique insights into the dynamic changes experienced by both infants and mothers right here in our community.
Key Findings:
1. Decreased spit-up for Infants:
44% of parents reported improvement in how often their infant spit up 1 week after release(s) This positive trend persisted, with 49% of parents noting improvement in how often their infant spit 4 weeks after release(s)
2. Nipple Pain Relief for Mothers:
Mothers experienced notable relief from nipple pain during the initial latch, with 76% reporting improvement after one week of release(s), as documented in our survey. The positive effect continued, with an impressive 84% of mothers reporting reduced nipple pain during the initial latch 4 weeks post procedure.
Nipple pain during feeding also saw improvement, with 71% and 83% of mothers reporting relief one and four weeks after release(s), respectively.

Our surveys revealed a substantial 63% improvement in the reported gassiness of infants just one week after the release(s). This improvement increased to 70% according to responses gathered at 4 weeks
4. Strengthened Breastfeeding Success:
A remarkable 62% of mothers reported an overall improvement in breastfeeding success within the first week following the release(s) The positive trajectory continued, with an impressive 77% of mothers expressing enhanced breastfeeding success at 4 weeks.
Conclusion: Our study was a thorough examination of the impacts of tongue and lip tie releases on breastfeeding journeys. These findings illuminate the dynamic changes experienced by infants and mothers, reinforcing the potential benefits of these interventions in nurturing successful breastfeeding experiences.
